Opening an image

When you open an image for editing, you begin by locating the file. Choose File > Open, as shown in Figure 4-1. The Photoshop File dialog box opens with your files displayed.

Click a file to display it in the pane on the left side of the dialog box. Then click Open to open the selected file.

After you open an image, you see a thumbnail version of the image in the main area. Click the image to see the actual image, which appears in the main area. To get access to the other editing functions in the main area, simply double-click the image to edit it.

If you click a thumbnail image of an image that’s open in the main editing area, Photoshop opens the file you clicked on. Otherwise, it opens the image file in the folder where you stored it. To store an image in a folder, simply double-click its thumbnail image and choose to open the file in a new window.

Why use Photoshop?

Most people use Photoshop to edit images, create beautiful digital art and create new high quality images. But with Photoshop you can edit videos too.

sound recordings

(Many types of digital data can be read like a file.)

In addition to editing videos, you can create new images, comics, patterns and much more, using Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements.

While we’re only using Photoshop to edit images, make sure you have a good understanding of the fundamentals of Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements. This includes knowing how to crop, rotate, flip, scale and sharpen an image.

You might have heard about Photoshop effects, also called filters, which you can use to create artistic effects on images.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a widely popular professional image editor that was developed by Adobe.

Photoshop is a fully featured image editor that lets you edit pictures, graphics, logos, websites and other types of digital media.

You can use Adobe Photoshop to create or edit photographs, videos, GIFs and other files. You can also create digital paintings, illustrative drawings, photographs, animated videos and more.

Adobe Photoshop includes many tools for editing images. Some of these tools can be used to edit videos and other media as well.

creating web graphics

editing vector graphics

tweaking videos

Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements include many tools for creating, modifying and editing images. You will probably use most Photoshop tools to modify images.

Things to keep in mind

In some cases, you might need to use other image editing software to modify your image.

If you edit several photos, it might be useful to make a shortcut that opens Photoshop and loads the images into the program.

What is a digital effect?

A digital effect is a photograph that is manipulated to mimic some aspect of film photography. Digital effects are not real photography; they are created using software and are usually one of the first things that we learn in Photoshop.

Brushes

Brushes are one of the most popular tools in Photoshop. They can be used for various effects, including compositing, painting, erasing and retouching images. Brush sizes and forms are similar to those of pens, and can be tailored to a certain image’s workflow. Brushes in Photoshop are often customized by users to achieve a desired result.

The Scatter Brush can be used to create a variety of effects, such as drawing splattered paint.

The Eraser provides the most basic form of editing. It can be used to remove color and texture from an image. It has three modes: Hard, Soft and Fuzzy. With the original applier tool, you can apply objects to one or multiple layers.

The Tint Brush allows you to create a variety of graduated patterns with different amounts of color. You can then use this to apply these patterns to one or multiple layers.

The Blob Brush makes it easy to draw circles and other shapes.

Spiral Brush

Create a variety of brush effects with the Spiral Brush. This brush has a custom number of rotations which can be adjusted.

The Gradient Stroke Brush lets you create radially-arranged color gradients. You can customize the color stops.

The Healing Brush can be used to copy, duplicate or merge objects. It works similar to the Edit→Copy or Edit→Paste commands.

Pen tools

The Pen tools are one of the most useful features in Photoshop. You can create various effects with them. With a small brush, you can create various textures or draw with colors.

The Pen tool has two additional brush modes, which allow you to paint, draw, blend, or create textures.

The Pen tool can be used to sketch. One can then use the Rectangular Marquee tool to draw a box around the area that is meant to be selected. You can either click the box and select it, or hold down the ALT key and click the box. This selects the box.

The Paint Bucket can be used to blend colors. It has three modes: Normal, Multiply and Screen.

The conversion of ammonium ions to an intermediate nitrate-containing acid and a gaseous nitrogen-containing species, in the presence of ammonia, involves a complex series of reactions. As a general rule, the production of nitrates is accompanied by production of unwanted by-products, which include, for example, nitric oxide, nitric dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen monoxide, nitrosamines and nitrosoxides of acidic compounds. Even trace amounts of such by-products can be objectionable.
On one hand, it is desirable to eliminate the potentially harmful by-products of the reaction; and on the other, the use of excess ammonia can be expensive. The result is the manufacture of a nitrate-containing, ammonia-ammonium salt mixture. The resultant waste material, containing significant amounts of ammonium nitrate, ammonium carbamate and ammonium nitrite, is hazardous. Handling the waste material in any manner to recover and use the nitrate compound is complicated by the presence of the ammonia.
There is a need for a process to produce nitrate-containing, ammonia-ammonium salt mixtures that can be readily separated into the product nitrate and a spent mixture containing the ammonia-ammonium salt.Q:
